This paper aims to compare LBS (69% gastric bypass) between patients with cirrhosis and without cirrhosis. We conducted a retrospective 13 matched case-control study including bariatric patients with cirrhosis and without cirrhosis. Demographics, operative variables, postoperative complications, long-term weight loss, and comorbidity resolution were compared between groups. Sixteen Child A patients were included in the patients with cirrhosis (PC) group and 48 in patients without cirrhosis (control) group. Mean age was 50years; preoperative BMI was 39 ± 6.8kg/m . Laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were performed in 69% and 31%, respectively. Follow-up was 81% at 2years for both groups. PC group had a higher rate of overall (31% vs. 6%; p &lt; 0.05) and severe (Clavien-Dindo ≥ III; 13% vs. 0%; p = 0.013) complications than that of the control group. Mean %EWL of PC at 2years of follow-up was 84.9%, without differences compared with that of the control group (83.1%). Comorbidity remission in PC was 14%, 50%, and 85% for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia, respectively. Patients without cirrhosis had a higher resolution rate of hypertension (65% vs. 14%, p = 0.03). LBS is effective for weight loss and comorbidity resolution in patients with obesity and Child A liver cirrhosis. There were no objective signs of gastric remigration in 93% of investigated patients. Acknowledging the limitations of these preliminary reports, bariatric surgeons are encouraged to further investigate the potentials of LTC in their patients. Submucosal tumors (SMTs) of the gastrointestinal tract are a rare pathological entity comprising a wide variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. Even if most SMTs are benign tumors (e.g., leiomyomas), a smaller portion may have a malignant potential (e.g., gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)). Preoperative diagnosis of SMT in bariatric patients may arise challenging clinical dilemmas. Long-term surveillance may be difficult after bariatric surgery. Moreover, according to SMT location, its presence may interfere with planned surgery. Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) has emerged as an effective approach for minimally invasive en bloc excision of SMTs. The frequency of preceding child vocalization or word production predicted maternal imitation type (vocalization or word); however, frequency of maternal vocalization predicted child vocalization imitation only. The results showed that child hearing experience affected imitation in both communication partners. To present epidemiological data on rheumatic heart disease (RHD), the most common acquired heart disease in children and young adults in low- and middle-income countries, for North-Central Nigeria. In this pilot study, we conducted clinical and echocardiography screening on a cross section of randomly selected secondary schoolchildren in Jos, North-Central Nigeria, from March to September 2016. For outcome classification into borderline or definite RHD, we performed a confirmatory echocardiography using the World Heart Federation criteria for those suspected to have RHD from the screening. A total of 417 secondary schoolchildren were screened, of whom 247 (59.2%) were female. The median age was 14years (IQR 13-15). Clinical screening detected 8/417 children, whereas screening echocardiography detected 42/417 suspected cases of RHD. Definitive echocardiography confirmed 9/417 with RHD corresponding to a prevalence of 21.6 per 1000 (95% CI, 6.7-36.5). All but one of the confirmed RHD cases (8/9) were borderline RHD corresponding to a prevalence of 19.2 per 1000 (95% CI, 8.3-37.5) for borderline RHD and 2.4 per 1000 (95% CI, 0.1-13.3) for definite RHD. RHD was more common in boys and cardiac auscultation missed over 50% of the cases. This study showed a high prevalence of RHD among secondary schoolchildren in North-Central Nigeria with a vast predominance of asymptomatic borderline lesions. Larger school-based echocardiography screening using portable or handheld echocardiography aimed at early detection of subclinical RHD should be adopted. During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, extra demand led to staff reorganization; hence, cardiac surgery consultants joined the ECMO retrieval team. This article describes how we increased service provisions to adapt to the changes in activity and staffing. The data were collected from 16 March 2020 to 8 May 2020. The patients were referred through a dedicated Web-based referral portal to cope with increasing demand. The retrieval team attended the referring hospital, reviewed the patients and made the final decision to proceed with ECMO. We reported 41 ECMO retrieval runs during this study period.
